A teenage driver was taken into custody following a fatal car crash in Chicago’s Avalon Park area. One man was killed and two other people were injured after the 17-year-old was speeding in a Volkswagen Jetta and allegedly hit the group as they crossed the street at Blackstone and 83rd Street, according to police.

Police reported that the accident occurred at around 8:30 pm on Tuesday, September 24th as the teenager was driving southbound on Blackstone. After allegedly striking the pedestrians, the 17-year-old hit a Pontiac Sunfire on 83rd Street, although the drive of that vehicle was unharmed.

Authorities report that the pedestrian was 32-year-old Eugene Ratcliff, who was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The other pedestrians were taken to other hospitals in the Chicago area for treatment.

The 17-year-old attempted to run from officers on foot but was taken into custody, according to police. It’s still unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident, and no charges have yet been filed as of Wednesday.
