Going to college can be an enriching, fun, and new experience for adolescents. They are being exposed to the world in a much different context than they have been raised in and they’re on their own, also. That being said, the university owes all students and faculty a duty of care to keep them safe on campus. They should be taking every measure possible to care for the tens or hundreds of thousands of people on their property everyday. When they fail to uphold this duty, though, and someone is injured on their campus, they can likely be held liable.

Being that a university is where people call home for several years, a campus encompasses a vast range of aspects of human life and living. There are a number of things that can go wrong on a college campus, such as hazing incidents, pedestrian-vehicle accidents, slip-and-falls, gym accidents at the recreational complex, possibly even assault later at night while walking through campus. And the resulting injuries can be severe depending on what happened. Whatever the situation may be, a premises liability case would allow you to sue the university since it happened on their property.

Unfortunately, one hot-button issue that often occurs on college campuses is sexual assault. In sexual assault cases, there is a risk at any place – a parking lot, a fraternity party, a bathroom – and universities should be doing all that they can to prevent the possibility of this due to its prevalence. According to the Department of Justice, 20% to 25% of women will experience a completed or attempted rape at some point during their college career. Knowing that this shocking statistic exists should be enough to prompt some serious measures by all universities to prevent the occurrence of even more sexual assault.
