“Radiculopathy” describes a condition in which one or more nerves are not working properly; it can occur in the spine, but more commonly in the neck and lower back. While it is not a specific condition by itself, symptoms typically generate from damage to a nerve root, which can result in pain, numbness, weakness, or difficulty controlling particular muscles.

Conditions which irritate nerves in the cervical, lumbar, or thoracic spine are referred to as “cervical radiculopathy,” and degeneration of the cervical spine can lead to a variety of debilitating conditions, including neurological. While many suffer from degeneration of the spine simply due to old age, acute trauma from a traffic accident can significantly worsen this damage and affect nerves which travel from the neck to the lower back through the spine.

If you have suffered aggravation of a previous spinal injury in an accident, you may be rightfully concerned that the insurance company will correlate your injury to other causes and cast doubt on the effects of your recent accident. Fortunately, experienced injury attorneys can effectively demonstrate the accident’s effects and how your condition was worsened in the process.

Symptoms of spinal cord injuries include paralysis, numbness, leg weakness, and loss of bowel/bladder control, and tests including x-rays, MRI scans, and CT scans may be used to determine the injury’s precise location and extent of damage. For radiculopathy-related conditions, EMG tests may be conducted to analyze muscles’ responses to messages sent from nerves.
