Many people use space heaters without a second thought to provide us with some extra warmth at any point of the year, especially during the winter. These may seem harmless, and while most of the time they are, they can pose a great danger to users since it can be the trigger to start a fire. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, they estimate that around 25,000 residential fires occur and 300 people die per year due to space heater fires. Over 30% of home fires are due to space heaters. This is not an insignificant number at all. If you or a loved one has been injured in a space heater fire, you may consider filing a lawsuit against the responsible party.

What can happen in a space heater accident?

A space heater poses a risk to those around it when it overheats. When this happens, the outer part of the space heater can melt and combust, setting anything around it ablaze. Slowly, this can turn into the whole living or work area and destroy everything. You may even suffer your own injuries such as burns from the fire or attempting to extinguish it. The best thing that you can do is keep yourself safe and call for help right away in an effort to prevent any injury to yourself.

Space heaters may also be placed too close to flammable items, such as clothing or bedding. This can cause the heat that is produced to set fire to the item and extend around the area. These accidents are often caused by defective or malfunctioning components to the heater. When these malfunction, it can be in the blink of an eye that an accident occurs. In the past, many space heaters have been recalled for this very reason

Who is responsible?

According to product liability laws, when a product malfunctions and causes you injury, you have the right to sue the product manufacturer. When a space heater fire is found to be caused by the product itself and its faulty components, you have the right to sue either the manufacturer of the space heater or the manufacturer of the faulty component of the space heater, if it is the case that that component was from a different seller. There may also be liability further in the chain of distribution that you can attribute to the retailer of the space heater for selling a defective product. After you discuss your case with your attorney, you two will come to a clearer conclusion as to who is liable for your injuries.
