Scrapers, most commonly used in road construction, are machines used in moving earth, stones, soil, and rocks over smooth surfaces for relatively short distances (less than two miles). A scraper can either be self-propelled or towed and consists of a wagon with a bladed bottom gate. The blade scrapes up the earth as the wagon pushes forward and forces the excavated materials up into the wagon. Once the wagon is filled, the gate closes, and the materials are transported to their destination.

Scrapers are dangerous pieces of machinery due to their size, strength, force, and the number of moving parts, with the ability to cause serious and deadly injuries. Causes of Scraper Accidents

Scraper accidents can occur for a number of reasons. Scraper operators who are distracted or improperly trained can cause serious injuries to themselves and bystanders. Scraper accidents can also occur when the scraper hits debris such as tree stumps, trees, and boulders, the hopper is overloaded, the operator’s view is blocked, and/or overhead power lines to name a few.

Scraper accidents can also occur when a scraper is defective in design and/or manufacture. In the event that a defective scraper caused your accident and injuries, the product designer, manufacturer, and anyone involved in the chain of distribution could be found liable for your damages.

Scraper Accident Injuries

Because of the weight and power of a scraper, accidents are often quite serious and often deadly. Common scraper accident injuries include lacerations, fractures, crushing injuries, amputation, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and wrongful death. Not only can these injuries be devastating, they can be life changing.

If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to negligence on the job site or a defective product, an experienced personal injury lawyer can review your claim and determine if there were unsafe working conditions, potential OSHA violations, and other hazards that may have existed at the time of your accident. They will also determine who may be liable for your injuries and damages and what compensation you may be entitled to.
