Nursing home abuse is an ongoing problem in the United States, and it’s estimated that as many as one in three nursing home residents have been a victim of abuse and/or neglect within their facilities. If your loved one has been a victim of nursing home abuse, speak with an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible.

There are some risk factors to be familiar with if you believe someone you know has been abused or neglected in a nursing home, such as:

  • Facility-related factors – Poor conditions within a nursing home, such as lack of security, lack of proper care protocols, failure to conduct background checks on employees, and understaffing, can increase the likelihood of abuse in the facility.
  • Caregiver-related factors – Some caregivers are insufficiently trained, inexperienced, unsupported, or given too many responsibilities, and resulting stress and other intense emotions can increase the risk of abuse or neglect.
  • Health impairments – Unfortunately, some residents who have diseases such as Alzheimer’s or dementia may be more likely targets of abuse or neglect because of their limitations and the decreased likelihood of the abuse being reported.
  • Aggressive behavior – Combative or otherwise aggressive behavior can be contagious among residents or the caregivers themselves, and the existence of this behavior in the first place can create a vicious cycle that can worsen or even spread throughout the facility.
