Consequences of Prescription Medication Errors

A study conducted by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that prescription medication errors occur in more than one in five medications that are given to children. While this is similar to the rate of adult prescription medication errors, when a child is given the wrong medication or a medication at the wrong dosage, they can suffer more serious complications and death.

Children are more susceptible to complications due to medication errors because of their smaller size and the fact that their organs, which are the body’s natural filter for detoxification, are not as developed as an adult. The most common types of side effects due to prescription medication errors include:

  • Organ failure
  • Skin rash
  • Heart and lung problems
  • Overdose
  • Psychological issues
  • Death

How Prescription Medication Errors Occur

Most doctors and hospitals do their best to prevent medication errors, however accidents still occur. Medication errors are preventable and are almost always the result of carelessness. The most common reasons prescription medication errors occur include:

  • Sloppy handwriting
  • Wrong method of administration
  • Failure to screen for other medications
  • Misdiagnosis
  • Combining doses
  • Mixing up medical records
  • Understaffed medical facilities
  • Labeling errors and incorrect instructions
  • Inattentiveness
  • Failure to monitor patient
  • Failure to warn of side effects or adverse reactions

Doctors and other medical professionals have a legal responsibility to abide by medical standards of care. When they do not follow these standards, they put their patients at risk for serious injuries and death. If your child suffered an injury or tragically died due to a prescription medication error, your family has a legal right to pursue a claim against the negligent party. An experienced personal injury lawyer can determine who may be liable for their damages and what compensation you may be entitled to.
