Pinch Points
“Pinch point” describes a point which presents a risk of a body part being caught between two moving parts, or one moving and one stationary part. In some machines, two parts move in close proximity, one of which in a circular motion, such as in chain drives, belt drives, gear drives, feed rolls, and gathering chains.
Pinch points typically pose safety risks in two ways:
- Accidental contact with the machine which forces a body part into the pinch point;
- Clothing, hair, or jewelry getting caught between moving parts, which then draws the person into the pinch point.
