Peoria, located in north-central Illinois, is the state’s third-largest city outside the Chicago metro area and home to about 115,000 people with a metro population of nearly 374,000. About 27% of the population is between 25 and 44 years of age, and hospitals and medical centers are among the city’s largest employers.

Cities, towns, and communities throughout Illinois enact and enforce their own ordinances (in addition to state law) regarding dog ownership and responsibilities. Here are some of Peoria’s local ordinances for dog ownership:

  • Dogs are not allowed to roam free; this is punishable by a $50 fine, and subsequent fines may increase up to $300 (Section 4-2);
  • Animals must be leashed or otherwise restrained at all times when not on the owner’s property;
  • Dogs must be treated humanely in terms of food, water, shelter, and veterinary care (Section 4-6);
  • A dog bite or attack must be reported to Peoria police within 24 hours; failure to do so is a violation of law (Section 4-13);
  • A Peoria citizen may only shelter a stray animal for up to 48 hours while contacting an animal shelter or animal control (Section 4-15);
  • Dog owners are protected from “frivolous lawsuits” which involve false allegations or the intentional provocation of the dog (Section 4-20);
  • Dog owners must register their dogs and provide proof of immunization (Section 4-52);
  • A dog which attacks an individual may be impounded for ten days and released if a licensed veterinarian determines the dog does not have rabies (Section 4-59).
