Pedestrian Safety in the Winter
With the snow and freezing temperatures of winter come icy and slippery roads, which pose risks not only for vehicles but also pedestrians, especially in urban areas. If you’ve been injured in an accident due to another’s negligence, speak with an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible.
There is a greater risk for pedestrians during the winter months due to both slippery roads, which can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles, and weather conditions (particularly snow) which reduce drivers’ visibility, especially at night. It’s always recommended to stay on sidewalks when they are cleared of snow, and when on a road with no sidewalk, walk against the flow of traffic and stay as close to the curb as you can. Also follow all marked crosswalks when crossing the street, and keep an eye out for all vehicles coming to a stop to ensure that they indeed stop rather than lose traction and begin to slide; this is especially important during or immediately after a snowstorm!
Winter reduces visibility in more ways than one, which requires extra caution at all times. With shorter days and more darkness, a walk in the afternoon or evening is much darker than during the spring and summer, and during the day sunlight can impair our vision by reflecting strongly off of white, snowy surfaces. If you do a significant amount of outdoor walking at any time this winter, it’s recommended to wear shoes or boots which have good traction to avoid slipping on snow or black ice. Also, remember that the risk doesn’t always go away when you enter a building, as melted snow tracked in from others could increase the risk of a slip-and-fall accident.
