Pedestrian Accident Causes
Every year, more than 70,000 pedestrians are injured in traffic accidents and over 4,000 lose their lives, according to estimates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It is easy to see why pedestrians are at greater risk of losing their lives in accidents than motorists, motorcyclists, and even bicyclists. Here are some of the most common causes of traffic accidents involving pedestrians:
- Left-turning drivers – whether on high-speed roads or in residential areas, drivers must exercise proper caution when making left-turns to avoid accidents of any kind.
- Jaywalking – it is important for pedestrians to cross at designated crosswalks, and when accidents occur while a pedestrian is crossing at an improper location, the driver may not be entirely liable for the accident.
- Distracted driving – these accidents have increased significantly in recent years and often involve the use of cell phones or other electronic devices while driving. These are entirely preventable accidents that result in needless injuries and deaths on a daily basis and drivers must be held responsible.
- Distracted walking – accidents involving distracted pedestrians are also on the rise and for many of the same reasons, such as cell phone use.
- Reduced vehicle noise – while this is debated, some claim that quieter electric and hybrid vehicles are more difficult for pedestrians to detect, albeit when the pedestrian does not take enough time to check for oncoming cars from either direction.
- Reduced visibility – the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that as many as 7 in 10 traffic accidents involving pedestrians occur at nighttime. Poor weather conditions are also a common contributing factor to reduced visibility.
- Drunk driving – consistently among the leading causes of traffic accidents and fatalities, intoxicated drivers must be brought to justice and we must always help to educate others about the dangers of intoxicated driving.
- Traffic Density – when streets are packed with vehicles, and with countless pedestrians and bicyclists on either side, the risk of an accident naturally increases, and busy streets with higher speed limits can be especially risky.
- Rolling stops – drivers who do not come to complete stops when they are supposed to are at risk of striking crossing pedestrians and are likely to be held liable for the accident.
- Speeding – another top contributing factor to pedestrian accidents, drivers who break the law by speeding may not have enough time to stop before striking a person or vehicle and creating a needless accident, and these drivers must be held accountable for their negligence.
