A 43-year-old man from Taylorsville was killed in a 3-car accident that occurred Tuesday evening near Stonington. According to Illinois State Police, Melvin R. Norris Jr was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by the Christian County Coroner’s Office. Police report that Norris was driving north on Illinois 48 just south of Stonington when he crossed the center line and hit a semitruck driven by Derek M. Bess, 30, head-on in the southbound lane.

Norris’ vehicle was pushed off the road, and the semitruck crossed both lanes of traffic and stopped in a ditch. Debris from the collision also hit a car driven by Amanda S. Swank, 34, of Stonington. Bess and Swank were both wearing seat belts and refused medical treatment, but Norris was not wearing his seat belt. Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
