At 4:30 p.m. police responded to a call of a car driving into the CVS in Kimbark Plaza at the corner of 53rd Street and South Kimbark Avenue, said Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago police spokesman.

The driver, a white woman in her mid-40s, said it was an accident, but declined to give her name or answer other questions. It was unclear how fast the car was going, but the air bags deployed.

Police on the scene said a man was taken to the hospital, but the cause or extent of his injuries was unclear. A responding officer, Theresa Barry said, “The driver accidently put the car in drive instead of reverse.” Manager Ruth Halisz of Leona’s restaurant in Kimbark Plaza said a witness rushed into the restaurant after the accident and asked for workers to call 911.

A CVS customer Malik Lindsay said he was leaving the store as the driver crashed into it. “It looked like it was an accident, it looked like they hit the gas [pedal] instead of the breaks. I don’t think anyone inside CVS was hurt.” The CVS was temporarily closed after the accident.
