This new year could be a big one for driver safety across the nation, as a variety of new trucking regulations will be introduced to reduce truck-specific speed-limits, improve training for new professional truck drivers, and increase lengths for tractor-trailers.

The first is the new “speed limiter mandate,” which will reduce the speed-limit for trucks weighing more than 26,000 pounds to 65 miles per hour. Then, a national clearinghouse will be established to keep records of all drug/alcohol tests taken by new drivers to earn their CDL (commercial driver’s license) credentials.

The mandates for improved training for new drivers aim to improve safety and efficiency among truck drivers, which will hopefully prevent more accidents and injuries on the road, reduce travel time and truck maintenance, and contribute to better results in cost-reduction throughout the industry.

There is also a measure currently in Congress (though not yet enacted) to permit states to allow longer-tandem (double) tractor-trailers to be hauled on highways, which many states currently do not permit. Allowing these “double” trailers would help drivers to spread out the weight and balance of cargo and improve their control of these vehicles, especially in poor road/weather conditions.
