Never tie pacifiers or other items around the neck of a little one
Children can become entrapped and easily strangle in the most unexpected ways, including items that are tied to the neck of a child or on the front of their clothing. The first rule for preventing strangulation is to never tie pacifiers, toys, teethers, necklaces, or other items to the neck of the child as these items can catch on toys, crib posts, pieces of furniture, or they may just tighten around your child’s neck unexpectedly. These items should never be tied to a crib, car seat, or stroller either, and bibs, clothing with drawstring, or headbands should only be used under supervision to prevent strangulation.
To further prevent strangulation from toys, blinds, and other household items, experts recommend that parents follow these safety tips:
- Cut out all drawstrings in clothing and cut the strings of mittens;
- Never use necklaces or headbands on an infant and supervise young children when using these items or playing with toy jewelry;
- Keep mobiles out of reach of children and remove them completely when your infant is five (5) months old or can put themselves onto their hands and knees unaided-whichever comes first;
- Clip the strings and ribbons off of all toys;
- Remove your child’s bib before playtime, naptime, and bedtime;
- Do not tie anything to your child’s neck or front of their clothing;
- Do not allow telephone cords to dangle;
- Never place a child’s bed, crib, or any furniture near window blind cords or curtains;
- Tie all window blind cords or clip them and attach safety devices and blind stops;
- Do not hang diaper bags or purses where infants have access-a child can become entangled in the straps or strings;
- Do not use crib bumpers or cribs with cutouts on the headboard and footboard;
- Do not allow infants to sleep on adult beds and do not use bunk beds for children under the age of six (6);
- Never leave a child alone in a stroller-they can slip down, entrapping their head.
To ensure that your home is child-safe, get down on your hands and knees and look at things from the eye level of an infant. If you cannot completely childproof your home, consider doorknob covers and childproof locks to rooms that they should not have access to. And of course, keeping an eye on your little ones is the best way to prevent devastating accidents and injuries.
