Never place infants to sleep on air mattresses
Inflatable beds are cheap and convenient, especially when traveling or having guests in the home. Unfortunately, the soft, uneven surfaces of air mattresses are also dangerous for infants, increasing the chances of sudden infant death. According to data recorded by the National Child Death Review Case Reporting System, in 24 states where air mattresses are more widely used, 108 infants died between 2004 and 2015.
While this number may seem small compared to the number of strangulation or suffocation deaths in a traditional bed (900 deaths alone in 2015), the number of deaths has been steady enough for the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to begin working with the air mattress industry to work on safety standards and labeling in 2014, which now requires all air mattresses and their packaging to have warning labels for parents.
Air mattresses for every day, full-time beds have become popular in recent years, mainly due to their affordability, especially with lower income families with less disposable income, and with renters who have had to deal with bed bug situations in rental properties.
According to the CPSC, infants under the age of 15 months should never be placed to sleep on an air mattress. Infants can suffocate on the impermeable surface of the air mattress where the material could conform to their mouth, or they could become trapped between the air mattress and the bed frame or wall. For a safer sleep space for your infant, place your infant on their back in a crib or play yard that meets current safety standards, never use an inflatable mattress in a crib or play yard, and remember that cribs are the best, and most safe areas for infants to sleep.
