Naperville Dog Bites
About 28 miles west of Chicago in Naperville, home to about 147,000 people. Naperville is regularly ranked among the wealthiest cities in the Midwest and among the safest in the United States, and Edward Hospital is the city’s top employer with over 4,200 employees. The majority of the population is between 25 and 64 years of age.
Cities, towns, and communities throughout Illinois enact and enforce their own ordinances (in addition to state law) regarding dog ownership and responsibilities. Naperville’s municipal codes for animal control were recently updated in January 2015, and here are some of the city’s Chapter 4 ordinances for dog ownership:
- All Naperville cat/dog owners must maintain a license for each animal within 30 days of acquiring the animal or moving into a new residence; license tags must also be displayed on the animal’s collar and licenses are not transferrable between pets (Section 10-4-3-2);
- All dogs aged four months or older must receive an approved rabies vaccination which lasts one to three years (Section 10-4-5-1);
- Naperville limits ownership of cats and dogs to three dogs or less and three cats or less, except when raising a litter for up to four months after their birth (Section 10-4-5-2);
- Dog owners are responsible for ensuring that their dogs do not exhibit bad behavior or disturb the peace (Section 10-4-5-4);
- An animal which bites an individual will be delivered to a local licensed veterinarian and/or confined in accordance with the Animal Control Act (Section 10-4-10).
