One of the most common pieces of construction equipment is the nail gun. Nail guns are powerful tools that can be gas-powered, electric, pneumatic, or a hybrid, but regardless of how they operate, nail guns drive nails through wood in a fraction of a second. When one of these tools is defective or used negligently, it can cause serious, and sometimes deadly injuries.

Causes of Nail Gun Accidents

Many nail gun accidents are preventable, however with proper training and following the strict standards in place by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), these serious incidents could be avoided. When these standards are not followed, accidents occur, including:

  • Double fire-Nail guns are prone to double firing, especially by newer employees who are not accustomed to using these tools. The second nail is usually the one the causes the injury.
  • Blowout-Blowouts occur when the nail hits a knot in the wood and is expelled into another direction.
  • Misses-When a nail misses its target entirely, it is often airborne and hits something or someone else.
  • Hitting the safety-If the safety contact is bumped while the nail gun is being fired, more than one nail can be fired at once. This can be dangerous when the nail gun isn’t pointed at the surface it is intended to hit.

Nail Gun Injuries

The purpose of a nail gun is to drive nails through wood quickly and efficiently, which means they have no problem driving nails through skin and bone. This results in nearly 37,000 trips to the emergency room every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Nail guns are common at construction sites and two-thirds of nail gun accidents occur to roofers and carpenters as they work framing or performing sheathing work. The types of nail gun injuries commonly seen include:

  • Hand and finger injuries-Over 50% of nail gun injuries are to the hands and fingers and 25% of these accidents result in structural damage to the tendons, nerves, joints, or bones.
  • Lower extremity injuries-Thigh, knee, and foot injuries are the second-most common type of nail gun injuries.
  • Head injuries-Serious nail gun injuries can result in brain damage, paralysis, bone fractures, and even death.

If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to negligence on the job site, an experienced personal injury lawyer can review your claim and determine if there were unsafe working conditions, potential OSHA violations, and other hazards that may have existed at the time of your accident. They will also determine who may be liable for your injuries and damages and what compensation you may be entitled to.

We at 844 See Mike are proud to serve our fellow citizens in personal injury cases, especially when you or a loved one has been injured, and we are fully committed to protecting your rights and ensuring that the other party is held legally accountable when negligence occurs.
