Accidents occur every day that involve motorcycles and their riders. When a person is involved in a motorcycle accident, they increase their chances of suffering permanent injuries and even death. Most of these accidents could be prevented or at least the extent of damage lessened if the rider had been on a motorcycle helmet. In the state of Illinois, helmets are not required to be worn by law.

A motorcycle helmet that is fitted properly and meets the requirements to be worn on the road is the best way to ensure what while riding a motorcycle, you are protected. This helmet is the only thing between your head and the ground should an accident occur. With this being said, the federal government has a few recommendations on what a person should look for when purchasing a motorcycle helmet.

1. The helmet must have a sticker. When a helmet is approved by the US Department of Transportation, then it will have a DOT sticker. A helmet without this is not certified, thus it will not protect you as much. 2. Your entire head should be covered when wearing the helmet. A full-coverage helmet that includes a faceplate is the best option. 3. The helmet should fit snugly. When this is placed on the head, there should be no room in it for you to wiggle it about. 4. The chin strap should fit snug and to the point that it is not going to accidentally open up. 5. If you are involved in an accident, then it is time to get a new helmet. When helmets are involved in accidents, even if they seem okay, more than likely on the inside the padding is damaged and this could lead to not having any protection.
