A suburban couple was awoken early Friday morning after a car crashed into their garbage, then ended up in a retention pond. The accident occurred at 1:00 am in the 100 block of Pine Ridge Lane, and the driver had been charged with DUI, according to the Montgomery police department.

The homeowner, Andrea Schmidt, said her dogs barking woke her up and she knew something was wrong when she saw lights in the pond. She walked outside and saw a late-model Chrysler in the water. The driver was unconscious at first, but then told Schmidt he had been drinking before the accident.

Eric B. Vazquez, 22, of the 100 block of Maple Ridge Lane in Montgomery, has been charged with DUI, as well as improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, according to police. Fire crews towed the car away following the accident and Vazquez was released on bond and is scheduled to appear in court on October 27 in St. Charles.
