Mild and Severe Traumatic Brain Injuries
Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are commonly sustained in auto accidents, and often can be missed upon initial examination when visible injuries like cuts or broken bones are of greater importance. TBIs are generally classified as mild or severe; mild TBIs may involve a loss of consciousness or confusion/disorientation lasting less than thirty minutes and can have lasting effects if not treated properly, such as attention deficits, headaches, mood swings, and memory loss.
If a TBI results in lost consciousness for more than thirty minutes and memory loss for more than 24 hours after the injury, it is classified as a severe brain injury. Its debilitations may range from high-level cognitive impairments, abnormal speech, or loss of thinking ability to comatose states, and long-term rehabilitation is usually necessary to maximize the individual’s independence and physical and psychological function.
Auto accidents are the leading cause of hospitalization for TBIs in Americans ages 15 to 44 and the leading cause of death due to trauma in children and adults ages 5 to 24. The Atlantic National Center for Injury
Prevention and Control has also found that about 20% of all brain damage is attributable to auto accidents; this was the second-largest portion after falling accidents at about 28%. While all brain injuries are different and no two are entirely the same, their devastating effects on particular functions of the body can be correlated directly to the damaged areas of the brain. Impact toward the front of the skull may affect the frontal lobe, responsible for emotional control, or the temporal lobe, responsible for selective attention, while impact toward the back of the skull (or the brain being forced against it internally) may affect the occipital lobe, responsible for visual processing.
