Man Shot Outside Hilton Awarded $1.7 Million
In the parking lot of the Hilton Embassy Suites in Orlando, Florida, Troy Anderson was carjacked and shot. Anderson, 42, struggled with his assailant and was shot twice in the groin, requiring three weeks of hospitalization and a temporary colostomy. Anderson is physically unable to return to his work as a sales manager (earning $80,000 a year), and he requires continued medical care. His medical bills up to the trial totaled $200,000.
Hilton Hotels, the owner of the franchise and its managers, and SecurAmerica (the security company at the hotel) were named in the lawsuit. Anderson argued the lighting in the Hilton’s parking lot was inadequate, and the security guards were working as housekeepers—instead of patrolling the property every half hour, like they were supposed to. In the jury’s verdict, the hotel defendants were found 72% liable; the security firm, 28%. Anderson was awarded $1.7 million.
