A man died this morning after being struck by a CTA Orange Line train near the Ashland Avenue station on the South Side, officials said.

The 59-year-old man was struck around 8:50 a.m. after he got on the tracks near the Ashland Avenue station at 3011 S. Ashland Avenue, according to Tammy Chase, a spokeswoman for the transit agency. He was dead on the scene, officials said.

Chase said she did not know why the man was on the tracks.

As of 10:40 a.m. trains are on the move again after the incident, though there are residual delays, said CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski.

Earlier, about 40 passengers were taken off the train and moved onto shuttle buses. According to an alert on the transit agency’s website, trains were halted between Western Avenue and Halsted on the line.

Trains still operated between Midway and Western Avenue and between Halsted and Adams/Wabash, with shuttle buses used to transport passengers between Western and Halsted.
