Malnutrition is a widespread issue in nursing homes. In the approximate 1.6 million residents of nursing homes nationwide, it is estimated that nearly one-third suffer from malnutrition. In some of the most negligent nursing homes, it is estimated that up to 85% of residents suffer from some level of malnutrition and 30-50% of residents are considered underweight.

Malnutrition is the cause of an array of health conditions that are easily prevented, yet when nursing home staff are careless, residents can suffer.

Causes of Malnutrition

Most causes of malnutrition in nursing homes can be traced back to the nursing home staff. Nursing homes are vastly understaffed where one employee may be tasked with the care of up to 15 residents at a time while studies show that ideally, a nursing home staff member should be in charge of the nutrition of only two to three residents at a time.

In addition to understaffing, nursing homes suffer from a 93% turnover rate yearly due to the stresses that the job involves. Inexperienced staff members are not often given proper training and make mistakes regarding the nutrition of their residents.

Symptoms of Malnutrition

Malnutrition can cause a variety of serious complications. Physical symptoms of malnutrition include:

  • Skin issues-Skin may become yellow, dull, and heavily wrinkled. The skin under the fingernails may turn whitish in color.
  • Cognitive difficulties-Malnutrition that has been allowed to progress will often begin to affect the thinking of a resident. A resident may appear confused, listless, irritable, and display dementia-like symptoms.
  • Mouth issues-If a resident is suffering from malnutrition will often have bright red gums. They may also suffer from oral yeast infections and canker sores.
  • Muscular issues-Muscles will become weaker and flaccid as the body begins to use nutrients stored in the muscles to make up for a lack of proper nutrition. Even simple tasks will cause exhaustion.
  • Eye issues-Vision may begin to worsen, and eyes may appear to be red, glassy, and corneas may be swollen.
