A “jackknife accident” occurs when a truck of two separate parts (a vehicle and trailer) folds at the point of separation due to a collision, creating a hinging effect similar to a closing pocketknife. While any accident involving a commercial truck can be devastating due to their incredible size and weight, jackknife accidents are especially dangerous for the much smaller vehicles involved and the people they carry, and life-changing injuries and even death can result.

For the safety of all drivers on the road, it’s important to understand some of the most common circumstances which can result in jackknife accidents:

  • High speed – Large commercial trucks are very difficult to stop in a short period of time, especially when travelling faster than 55 m.p.h. The higher the speed when the truck must stop, the greater likelihood that the tractor may swing out of control.
  • Curves – The longer the trailer and steeper the angle, the greater the risk that the trailer will swing and carry the truck’s momentum with it, causing it to fold on itself.
  • Slippery roads – Even slight losses of traction between the wheels and road in slippery or icy conditions, especially during the winter months, can shift weight from side to side and result in a jackknife.
  • Negligence or equipment malfunction – Malfunctions relating to the truck itself can result in an accident on the road, including brake or hydraulic failure, and the trucking company or a company responsible for the truck’s maintenance may be legally liable for an accident in these cases.
