While motorcycle accidents are statistically more common than car accidents, they can also result in more severe injuries as well. One of the most severe injuries that can result from a motorcycle accident is internal organ damage. Internal organ damage is any type of injury, damage, or internal bleeding that occurs in relation to an internal organ. There are many various types of internal damage that can occur as an injury from a motorcycle accident, but a few particularly severe ones would be internal bleeding, a ruptured spleen, abdominal aorta rupture, or broken ribs.

Internal bleeding

Internal bleeding may not necessarily involve an organ, per se, however, it is not outwardly apparent and also has to be diagnosed very promptly. If it is not properly treated as soon as possible, complications from internal bleeding include organ failure, coma, or death. It also depends on where the bleeding is, since some areas of the body’s internal bleeding may affect a person more negatively than others. If there is a large amount of internal bleeding in the brain, it can cause significant brain damage ending in a coma-like state for life. On the other side of the spectrum, if there is minor internal bleeding in your abdomen that is quickly diagnosed, then you may feel short of breath, dizzy, have abdominal bruises, and more. This type of more minor internal bleeding should still be promptly treated, but it will be a mild and simple treatment.

Ruptured spleen

According to Mayo Clinic, your spleen is right behind your ribcage and helps your body to fight infection and filters old blood cells from your bloodstream. Your spleen is ruptured when there is a break on the surface, which can cause internal bleeding that can be fatal. It may only require rest, while other times it may require emergency surgery. Any strong impact from a motorcycle accident – such as being thrown onto the pavement after a collision – to your abdomen could possibly result in a ruptured spleen.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture

An abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture can occur from several things, but one being some type of physical trauma from something like a motorcycle accident, according to the Mayo Clinic. These occur when the aorta, the major vessel supplying blood to the body, becomes enlarged and ruptures, which can cause life-threatening bleeding. This condition also may require emergency surgery and immediate medical attention since it is one of your largest organs and maintaining the health of your heart.

Broken ribs

One of the most common internal injuries from a road collision, especially for motorcyclists who are more exposed, is broken ribs. Broken ribs can be the result of physical trauma to the chest which cracks or actually break bones of the ribcage. Though the ribs may not be organs, they can affect surrounding organs by puncturing them and causing internal bleeding. In this case, immediate medical attention is needed. When the ribs break, any medical attention would help to relieve some pain, but it can be a painful ordeal depending on the severity.

The best way to reduce your risk of experiencing an internal organ injury is by protecting your external body. This will allow the protection to take the majority and the first brunt of an impact with the goal of leaving you unscathed. The more thick, sturdy clothing and padding that you employ when you head out onto the road, the safer you will be.
