Infant Suffocation Safety
Newborns and infants are especially prone to suffocation due to their underdeveloped neck muscles and the inability to raise their head. According to The Safe Kids Network, nearly 84% of unintentional suffocations occurring in children less than a year old, making it the leading cause of death for that age group.
The majority of childhood suffocation deaths occur at home, with 82% of infant suffocation occurring in bed. To protect infants and other young children from the dangers of suffocation, parents and caregivers should follow these safety tips:
- Always place your baby on their back to sleep. This is the safest position to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
- Never place an infant face down on soft surfaces, including sheepskin, waterbeds, comforters, or mattress covers.
- Never use soft bedding, blankets, stuffed animals, pillows, or plush toys in a crib or bed.
- Avoid using crib bumpers.
- Never leave a crib mattress covered in plastic and never place a child on any furniture covered in plastic or near plastic bags.
- Make sure that the crib mattress fits snugly within the crib-a mattress that is too small could entrap your infant.
- Make sure the fitted crib mattress is snug to prevent your infant from getting their head and neck entangled. Use crib sheet securing devices if needed.
- Never place an infant to sleep on a couch, soft surface, or adult bed.
- Do not allow your infant to share a bed with another child and avoid bed-sharing with your infant.
- Keep all plastic bags, including sandwich bags, garbage bags, packaging bags, dry cleaning bags, and shopping bags out of the reach of children, dispose of them by tying multiple knots in them and placing them in a secure trash receptacle, or recycle them.
- Keep balloons out of reach of small children and ensure all pieces of a broken balloon are disposed of.
- Learn CPR for children and adults and keep your skills up to date.
Parents and caregivers should also get on their hands and knees to inspect any area that small children may frequent to ensure that there are no choking hazards within reach of little hands, and they should always supervise all interactions between older children and infants to prevent unintentional suffocation accidents.
