Illinois, The Land of Lincoln, has the sixth largest population of all U.S. states while being 25th in size. Illinois is a major transportation hub and is full of small industrial cities and agricultural productivity in the north and center of the state, and a wide selection of natural resources throughout the south.
Illinois has three geographical divisions with Northern Illinois being dominated by Chicagoland, Central Illinois which is dominated by prairie land and small towns knowns as the Heart of Illinois, and Southern Illinois, which is the area south of U.S. Route 50 which is considered part of the Tri-State with Indiana and Kentucky.
There is a lively cycling culture in Illinois and more and more cyclists are taking to Illinois’ roadways every year, which unfortunately means more and more serious bicycle accidents are occurring.
Some of the most recent Illinois bicycle accidents include:
- July 2019-A 25-year old woman who was riding a Divvy bicycle in the 2600-block of West Chicago Avenue was struck and critically injured in a hit-and-run accident. The area has no dedicated bike lanes and is known for aggressive motor vehicle drivers.
- June 2019-A 32-year old cyclist riding westbound at the 400-block of West Grand Avenue was struck by a hit-and-run driver and critically injured. This was the second hit-and-run bicycle accident within a week in that area, both accidents involving Divvy cyclists.
- June 2018-Elizabeth Brackett, a longtime and award-winning Chicago journalist and broadcaster, died days after a Chicago bicycle accident. Brackett was struck along Chicago’s Lakefront Trail and remained in a coma while on a respirator after sustaining two fractured vertebrae in her neck.
- October 2018-A 54-year old man riding his bicycle and attempting to cross a street in Steamwood was struck and killed by a box truck at the intersection of East Lake Street and Walnut Avenue at 6:58 pm, leaving behind 4 children under 10 years old.
