How long does it take to stop a truck?
In general, it takes a large truck 40% more time to come to a complete stop than the average passenger vehicle under perfect conditions. When road conditions are less than ideal, a truck is carrying heavy cargo, or a truck driver is speeding or following other vehicles too closely, this stopping distance increases even further.
For example, a fully loaded tractor trailer that is going 65 mph on dry pavement would require 525 feet to come to a complete stop. By comparison, a passenger vehicle under these circumstances would require only 300 feet to stop.
In 2009, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) issued changes to braking standards, where a tractor trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 0-85,000 pounds traveling at 60 mph must come to a stop in 250 feet as opposed to the old standard of 355 feet. Trucks with a GVWR over 85,000 pounds must stop within 310 feet. These regulations only come into effect for trucks built after August 1, 2011 or August 1, 2014, depending on GVWR and truck configuration.
Cars are no match for commercial trucks and unfortunately, when a car and truck collide it can be catastrophic. Truck drivers are required to drive safely but sadly, some don’t.
