An overuse injury is typically a muscle or joint injury that is caused by any repetitive action or movement. These are seen in sports with such movements such as rowing, as well as jobs requiring repetitive movements, which can even be a desk job caused by typing throughout the day. Symptoms of an overuse injury may be swelling, tenderness, redness, limited range of motion of the affected area, and impaired function of the affected area.

Overuse injuries take different amounts of time to heal based on the severity of the injury. If you continued to overuse the affected area beyond the initial feeling of discomfort, then the injury will likely be more severe. Minor overuse injuries may heal on their own in a week or two with rest, icing, and keeping the injured area elevated.

Other types of injuries may require painkillers, anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy exercises to increase the area’s strength and flexibility, a splint or cast, or other treatment options to help repair the injury. More severe injuries can cause serious, permanent damage and may require surgery to repair, such as a severely torn meniscus. The recovery period can take several weeks or even months as you rest and let the area heal with treatment. The best option for a patient with an overuse injury is to first seek medical attention so that their doctor can prescribe the fastest and most helpful treatment specific to the injury.

If another person caused your injuries, you can file a claim against them for monetary damages.
