Herniated disc
A herniated disk can be a very painful and frustrating injury to experience after an accident. While this injury takes a physical and mental toll on you, this sudden accident can also take a toll on your finances. In any case, you can recover the costs for your damages with an insurance claim if someone else caused your injury. If you or a loved one has sustained a spinal cord injury from an accident, contact 844 See Mike for a free consultation so we can help you recover from this experience and get fairly compensated.
Your spinal cord is made of 24 bones which are called vertebrae. In between these bones are intervertebral disks, which are flat, round structures made of tough cartilage on the outside and soft cartilage on the inside. These act as cushions between your bones and as a shock absorber, as well. A herniated disk is the result of a high-energy impact that injures the spine, such as a fall or a motor vehicle collision. This causes one or more of the disks to crack on the outside, tough cartilage part and allow the softer inner cartilage to protrude out of the disk’s perimeter.
These injuries can be extremely painful to deal with on a day-to-day basis. This causes pressure against the outer tough cartilage and results in persistent lower back pain. This sharp pain is called sciatica and can extend all the way down to the back of a person’s leg. A person with a herniated disk may also feel numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg and/or foot. A doctor will diagnose you by testing your muscle strength and reflexes to sensations with a neurological examination. Then, an MRI scan helps to see the tissue and organs in the body. An MRI can indicate whether or not the disk appears normal or not.
The following treatment depends on the duration and the severity of the injury. Some disks can heal over a few weeks or months. Otherwise, doctors typically advise patients to rest, avoid straining yourself and physical exertion, prescribe anti-inflammatory medications, and provide some physical therapy exercises to help your back reach a full range of motion and function as it once did so that you do not feel the pain that you did before. More severe cases of herniated disks will likely require surgery, however, it is somewhat rare. Surgery may be aimed at relieving the pressure on the spinal nerves by targeting the herniation. After these treatments are followed as your doctor recommends, it should take about three months to feel back to normal again.
If another person caused your injuries, you can file a claim against them for monetary damages.
