Three people were killed on Tuesday when a garbage truck and a car crashed in Glenview. According to police, the truck was driving north on Harlem Avenue at around 12:30 pm when it struck the car, which was driving east on Harrison Street. Both vehicles caught fire and all three people in the car were killed, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The accident was so horrific, authorities were not immediately sure how many victims were in the vehicle. Video from the scene shows both vehicles engulfed in flames before Glenview firefighters were able to put it out. The driver of the garbage truck was unharmed, but a neighborhood woman, Michelle Schmalz, who attempted to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived on the scene was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Authorities have not issued traffic citations or charges as a result of the crash, according to Glenview police.
