A father has been charged with DUI after the fatal car accident on I-55 near Litchfield last week that left a woman and two of his children dead, according to Illinois State Police.

Alfredo McGee, 31, was driving a 2002 Chevy Impala on I-55 last Friday with a female passenger and four children. According to police, the Impala was either stopped or driving very slowly on the road when it was struck by a 2002 Ford van.

Alea Shannon, 27, Alfredo McGee Jr, 8, and Armondo McGee, 2, were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other children, 6-year-old Annastasia McGee and 5-year-old Alicea McGee, were transported to Cardinal Glennon Hospital. The driver of the van was treated and released.

Alfredo McGee was taken to a Springfield hospital and later released. He has been charged with one count of DUI but is not in police custody due to the extent of his injuries.

He was given paperwork to appear in court, but the court date is not yet known. Illinois State Patrol Spokesman Jeff Yenchko says that charges may be upgraded, but it is up to the state attorney’s office.
