Although the farm-population is steadily declining, the rate of fatalities resulting from farm accidents is not decreasing in proportion, due in part to an increase in the average age of farmworkers. Each year, about one-third of the farmworker population suffers a nonfatal injury, and about 3% suffer serious injuries which result in permanent disabilities.

Here are some facts about farming accidents from the U.S. government:

  • The risks of an accident are definitively higher in rural environments than in urban environments for a variety of reasons, such as isolation, less work-supervision, distance from emergency medical services, and less-controlled traffic.
  • Younger people are more prone to accidents, as more than half of the U.S.’s annual mortality among people between 15 and 24 years old results from accidents.
  • The machinery most associated with farm accidents is the motor vehicle.
  • Farm accidents are most common in the months of June, July, and August, which also comprise the busiest period of crop-production and harvesting.
  • The U.S. still lacks an adequate reporting method for farm accidents, which complicates our efforts to obtain accurate data and compare data from different sources.
