According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), approximately 4.7 million dog bites occur in the U.S. yearly. With an approximate population of 327 million people in the United States, this means that 1 in every 69 people experiences a dog bite every year, with 800,000 of those bites requiring medical attention.

81% of dog bites cause no injury or require no medical treatment, and you have a 1 in 112,400 chance of dying from a dog bite. In fact, you have more of a chance of dying from a cataclysmic storm, choking, a gunshot, an attack from wasps, and heart disease or cancer.

Most dog bites involve dogs that are not spayed or neutered and according to the CDC most dogs bite for the following reasons:

  • The dog is reacting to a stressful situation or is startled.
  • The dog is threatened or scared.
  • The dog is protecting its puppies, food, toys, themselves, or their owners.
  • The dog is not feeling well or is in pain.
  • The dog is biting or nipping during play.

According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), one-third of all homeowner’s insurance liability claims result from dog bites or dog-related injuries with the average cost being more than $37,000 per claim and $675 million yearly.

While any dog can bite, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), states that over 30 breeds and dog types were associated with dog bites and fatalities, which include:

  • Pit bulls
  • Rottweiler
  • German Shepherd
  • Labrador Retriever
  • Husky
  • Bullmastiff
  • Boxer
  • Great Dane
  • Alaskan Malamute
  • American Bulldog
  • Akita
  • Chow
  • Doberman
  • Chihuahua

It is important to remember, however, that many dogs are mislabeled as a particular breed, and as such all dogs, especially those that you are unfamiliar with, should be treated with caution.
