According to the National Safety Council (NSC), “motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of deaths in the workplace.” In response to the hazards of driving, the NSC encourages the public to participate in defensive driving classes. In the State of Illinois, persons aged 55 and beyond are given discounts when they pass a defensive driving course.

The American Association of Retired Persons, or AARP, stated that qualified individuals may get an annual discount of $20 to $150, depending on the driving record and holder’s policy. This course, however, must be taken every three years to maintain the discount. Since most elders tie driving to independence, a defensive driving class is a way to encourage safe and smart driving.
