Defective Children’s Products
Although children’s and babies’ toys and products are closely regulated, some dangerous and defective products do find their way into the market. Parents who hope to ensure that their homes are free of unsafe products should stay up-to-date with all product-recalls issued by the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC).
Here some commonly-recalled baby/child products that can potentially be dangerous:
Strollers – Strollers find their way onto recall lists for many different reasons. Some pose a risk of collapsing or allowing small children to fall out, while others may fold suddenly, which can bruise or break fingers which get caught in their hinges.
Changing tables and cribs – When defective, these can collapse without any warning, and a baby’s fall from a changing table at a significant height could cause devastating injuries. A collapsed crib poses the risk of catching a child between its wedges, which could cause bruises, broken bones, or even suffocation.
Toys – Although toys which contain parts that may be hazardous to small children usually include a proper warning label, choking hazards still exist in toys of many shapes and sizes and parents must always be mindful of their children’s toys and any small or detachable parts they may have.
Clothing – Babies require many different types of clothing, almost all of which is made with safe materials which will not cause pain, irritation, or other conditions. However, there has been some controversy over particular issues, such as flame-resistant sleepwear for babies; some parents argue that it’s entirely necessary, while others are wary of chemical flame-retardants in the clothes which may pose health hazards.
Baby swings – Parents who place their baby in a small swing to help him/her sleep should be mindful of potential risks, including the baby becoming trapped between the swing’s frame and the seat, becoming entangled in the harness’s straps, or falling out due to a defective frame or other part.
Baby carriers and car seats – Slings and backpack-style carriers pose risks of falls and injuries to babies. Car seats and carriers are rather common causes of injuries among babies and small children, as statistics estimate over 13,000 young children (five years old or younger) have been injured since 2011.
Bath seats – Parents should always maintain close supervision when their child is in a bath seat; defective bath seats could cause the child to slip out or tip over into the water.
