Defective Brake Lawsuit Awarded 8.75 Million

Defective products come at us from every kind of manufacturer; besides tainted pharmaceuticals, defective cars are possibly the most dangerous products that get made, sold, and recalled. In one of the more serious cases of recent memory, a man was run over by a faulty car.

In 2009, Mr. Blumer, a 43-year-old Pennsylvania tow-truck operator, was lowering a vehicle off the back of his Ford F-350 tow truck; the truck was in neutral—so when its parking brake broke, it rolled down the hill and ran over Mr. Blumer. He suffocated and died, and his wife and family sued Ford Motor Co. (Blumer v. Ford Motor Co.). Mr. Blumer’s family alleged that Ford Motor knew as early as July 2000 that the parking brake system used in its F-Series vehicles between 1999 and 2004 was defective. The jury found in favor of the family members, and awarded them $8.75 million.
