Most Dangerous Drunk Driving Days of the Year
The amount of traffic on our roads during holidays can reach new heights with every passing year, and depending on the season a number of other factors also come into play to create unnecessary risks. During Thanksgiving and Christmas, high traffic can combine with poor weather and impatient, reckless, or intoxicated drivers to cause a spike in auto accidents; during Fourth of July weekend, on the other hand, many are embarking on weekend vacations and attending fireworks displays, parties, and barbecues which may involve alcohol, which causes a similar rise in accidents despite nearly-opposite weather conditions.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that in 2014 (their most recent year for compiling such data), nearly 30,000 fatal auto accidents occurred in the U.S. While most of the accidents occurred in October (2,825), November was in fact the deadliest month, which some attribute to worsening weather conditions, increasing traffic, and the high consumption of alcohol during the week of Thanksgiving. The majority of alcohol-related accidents throughout the year took place between 9 pm and 3 am, while the majority of fatal accidents occurred between 3 pm and 9 pm (about 4,750 between 3 pm and 6 pm and nearly 5,000 between 6 pm and 9 pm).
Although most people consider New Year’s Eve or St. Patrick’s Day to be the most high-risk days of the year for drunk driving (and they are among the highest), the Fourth of July often proves to be the deadliest; 612 people lost their lives in auto accidents on July 4th between 2009 and 2013. According to msn.com, the most dangerous days of the year for these accidents include New Year’s Eve and Day; the Fourth of July; St. Patrick’s Day; Christmas; Thanksgiving (and the week off, including Black Friday); Memorial Day weekend; and the start of daylight savings time.
