The American driving experience is full of commercial trucks. There are some streets in American that ban the tractor trailer trucks from driving on these, but most everyone has been on a roadway shared with these big trucks. For those who deal with this on a daily basis, sharing the road is no big deal. However, it is still vital that we realize that these truckers have very intense regulations in which they must drive by everyday.

The US Federal Government has a commercial vehicle regulation in the Code of Federal Regulations. There are several specific rules that are outlined in Subsection 49 CFR 395.1. One of these rules is how many hours a truck driver can be on the road per day. The idea is to ensure that drivers are getting the amount of rest that they need in order to be safe on the roads. This is why every truck driver has to keep a log of when they drive, how long they have been driving, when they stopped and so forth.

Illinois abides by the federal mandated laws of rest periods and log keeping that is set forth by the government. However, certain rules regarding commercial truck drivers vary from state to state. With this being said, there are still drivers who do not abide by these rules. They may not stop when they should, drive long hours, and have log books that are not true. The problem with this is that fatigue in truck drivers is one of the most common reasons for these big trucks have accidents on the roadways.

These big trucks can weigh anywhere from 10,000 to 80,000 pounds, thus due to sheer size they are a danger on the road. Add into this a driver who is exhausted and sleep deprived, it becomes a larger issue.

Those who are injured by these big trucks are often having to deal with these injuries for the rest of their life, if they are not killed. The good news is that most of these large trucking companies have insurance to protect them against this accident, and provide money for the victims. There are several ways you can help to prevent a collision such as being aware of the roads at all times, allowing distance between you and a large truck and reporting truck drivers that seem to be asleep at the wheel.

If you are involved in an accident due to a sleepy commercial truck driver, then you need to protect your rights through seeking legal representation as soon as you are able.
