Children’s Bed Rail Recall
A bed rail recall was issued on December 6, 2012, for children’s bed rails. The products, manufactured by Dream on Me, Inc., were voluntarily recalled by the company; the announcement was made jointly with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, from Dream on Me’s headquarters in South Plainfield, N.J.
Around 900 units of Dream On Me Bed Rails are affected by the recall, all model numbers 420P and 420B. Consumers have been warned to stop using the bed rails immediately; a child can get trapped between the rail and their mattress, and suffocate or strangle themselves. The rails were designed to keep children from falling out bed; the products’ dimension are 17 inches high by 41 inches long, with a metal arm that goes around 1 ½ feet under the mattress.
The products were sold through small, independent retailers, and through Amazon and Wayfair, major internet merchants; they retailed for fifteen to thirty dollars. If you have proof of purchase, Dream on Me will refund the purchase amount, and if, not, they’ll compensate you twenty dollars. To file a claim, contact the company via phone (877-201-4317, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday), or their website: www.dreamonme.com. The website has instructions on destroying the bed rails; they also ask you to photograph the destruction (to make sure the product is gone forever), and email the photo with proof of purchase, for a full refund.
Although no injuries have been reported, the Dream on Me recall is just one of several recalls this year around children’s sleeping products; 220,000 infant travel beds were recalled by KidCo just last month. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission urges anyone who has had an incident with Dream On Me Bed Rails to visit SaferProducts.gov, and file a complaint. Also, the agency noted in the recall announcement that trying to sell an item under recall is a crime.
