Chicago is the third-most populous city in the United States and the most populated city in both Illinois and the entire Midwest. Chicago is an international hub for industry, technology, commerce, transportation, and finance and is the second-most visited city in the U.S. after New York City. With its economic and cultural diversity, large arts scene, 100 neighborhoods, and big biking commuting culture, it is easy to see why the median age is 33.4 and over 30 Fortune 500 are headquartered there.

Cities, towns, and communities throughout Illinois enact and enforce their own ordinances (in addition to state law) regarding dog ownership and responsibilities. Here are some of Chicago’s ordinances for dog ownership as stated by the Illinois General Assembly (ILGA):

  • Every owner of a dog over four months of age must be vaccinated from the Rabies virus (510 ILCS 5/8);
  • Any dog found running at-large may be apprehended and impounded (510 ILCS 5/9);
  • In order for a dog to be deemed “vicious”, a thorough investigation must be conducted by law enforcement, the Administrator, or Deputy Administrator (510 ILCS 5/15.1);
  • Following a “Dangerous Dog” determination, owners are required to follow certain parameters, including muzzling while in public, behavioral training, spaying or neutering, and microchipping (510 ILCS 5/15.1);
  • It is unlawful to allow any “Dangerous Dog” to leave the premises of its owner while not under the control of a leash (510 ILCS 5/15.2).
