According to the Niles Police Department, a 72-year-old man was killed on September 23, 2013, after he was struck by a vehicle in a “minor” accident while riding his bicycle in Niles. Stanley Lorkiewicz of North Octavia Avenue was riding his bicycle on North Milwaukee Avenue near Jonquil Terrace when he was struck by a vehicle. He exchanged information with the motorist and police arrived on the scene. According to police, the incident was a “minor accident.”

While officers were writing up their report, however, Lorkiwicz collapsed. He was revived and transported to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge and pronounced dead at 8:48 am, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. No citations were issued in relation to the accident, and an autopsy on Tuesday ruled that Lorkiewicz died from a heart attack, with heart disease listed as the secondary cause of death.
