Chicago is the most populated city in Illinois, as well as the third most populated city in the U.S. Chicago is an international hub for finance, culture, commerce, transportation, telecommunications, technology, and industry and is home to one of the busiest airports in the world. With 58 million visitors in 2018, Chicago became the second most visited city in the nation; just behind New York with 65 million visitors.

Chicago is also famous for its multiple museums, but is probably more famous for its sports, which are a big part of its culture. With the White Sox and Cubs, the Bulls, the Blackhawks, the Bears, and the Chicago Fire, Sky, and Red Stars, sports never stop in the Windy City.

Cycling has exploded in Chicago in recent years, both privately for recreation, alternative transportation, and health reasons, as well as through Divvy, the bike sharing company that native Chicagoans and tourists alike have fallen in love with. Chicago has more than 87 trails that cover over 960 miles for novice and experienced riders who like to take things off the beaten path, but it isn’t uncommon to see cyclists in day-to-day traffic as well.

Unfortunately, with the increase of bicycles on Chicago’s roads and trails comes an increase in Chicago accidents. Some of the most recent Chicago bicycle accidents include:

  • In June 2019, a man riding Divvy bicycles with his wife on the 400 block of Grand Avenue was struck by a dark-colored sedan that subsequently fled the scene. The man was taken to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition.
  • In July 2019 a 25-year-old woman was riding her bicycle in the 2600 block of West Chicago Avenue at 11 pm when she was rear-ended by a motor vehicle who fled the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
