The spinal cord is one of the most essential components in our body structure. It houses part of the central nervous system (CNS), which aids us with our reflexes, sensory processing, and many more functions relevant to our daily life. The spinal cord also supports our neck and head as well as keeping us upright and straight as a whole. A spinal cord injury is when some damage or fracture to the spinal cord affects its structure and function, and it can be extremely debilitating and life-changing. This is because it can affect the CNS which is in charge of motor and sensory function.
A complete spinal cord injury is when the spine is fully compressed or fractured to the point that messages cannot be sent below the point of injury. These injuries result in complete loss of sensory and motor function beyond the point of injury due to the damage to the nervous system. The chance of a drastic recovery is not high since there is no direct cure for spinal cord injuries. The chance of recovery also partially depends on the location of the injury, the severity, and the age of the patient.
However, this low chance does not eliminate the possibility of improvement in the recovery period. The majority of the recovery and improvement that a spinal cord injury survivor will go through occurs in the first six months following the injury. The lasting effects past the first year will likely remain permanent. For those with a Grade A injury, which means the injury is complete and one experiences no motor function or sensations below S4-S5, the chance of walking one year after your injury is less than 5%.
The best option that anyone could choose is to seek medical attention immediately following any type of accident or physical trauma. Even if you do not feel symptoms or pain right away, they may manifest within several hours or days. Ignoring the accident could result in you worsening the injury which prolongs the recovery period and can minimize the chance of a faster and better recovery. It may take years of physical therapy to make some noticeable progress, however, there is room to improve your muscle strength and range of motion with the right medical treatment.
