Can You Get Fined if Your Dog Bites Someone?
If your dog bites someone, you can be fined as well as sued in both civil and criminal court for any damages or injuries they have caused. For dogs that bite and are deemed dangerous, you will be required to pay a $50 public safety fine, and have the dog microchipped, and spayed or neutered within 14 days. You may also have to have the dog evaluated and trained by a certified behaviorist, ensure that an adult 18 or older is supervising the dog any time it is on public property, and keep the dog muzzled and leashed when off your property.
If your dog is involved in an attack that is especially aggressive, it may be deemed vicious. A vicious dog must be spayed or neutered within 10 days, kept behind a fence that is at least six feet tall, and can only leave your property if the dog is in danger due to a natural disaster or emergency or there is a court order issued. The owner of a vicious dog must also pay a $100 public safety fine. Any vicious dog that is found running at large will be impounded and you will have 15 days to file an appeal to avoid having the dog euthanized. You may also be responsible for the fees associated with the care of the dog while in the possession of animal control.
It is also important to remember that all dogs over the age of four months are required to have a valid, USDA-approved, and veterinarian-administered rabies vaccine at least every three years depending on the manufacturer of the vaccine. If your dog bites someone, they are required to be vaccinated annually and if they are not, you could be fined as well.
