Burn injuries can be some of the most painful and disfiguring types of injuries that anyone can suffer. For children, the effects of burns can be even greater. Children are smaller, have more sensitive skin that is still developing, and are more curious than adults, putting them at-risk for physical and emotional scarring that can last a lifetime. Sometimes burns are an unfortunate accident, but more often than not, burn injuries occur due to the negligent actions of someone entrusted with the care of your child.

Common Causes of Burn Injuries

Children are naturally inquisitive and much of their development is spent exploring the world around them. This inquisitiveness can put them in danger, especially when it comes to burns. The most common causes of burn injuries include:

  • Thermal burns-These types of burns raise the temperature of the skin and underlying tissue. These burns occur from direct contact with hot stove burners, curling irons, hot bath water, steam, cooking liquids, fires in a firepit, fireplace, or grill, fireworks, and hot foods and drinks.
  • Electrical burns-These burns are the result of coming in contact with electrical current and are commonly seen when a child bites electrical cords or sticks objects or their fingers into electrical sockets.
  • Chemical burns-Contact with household chemicals, whether on the skin, in the eyes, or if they are swallowed can cause serious, and sometimes deadly, chemical burns.
  • Radiation burns-Radiation burns are often the result of overexposure to the sun (sunburns) or less frequently, exposure to radiation from an x-ray.

Types of Burn Injuries

Burns are typically classified as first, second, or third-degree, depending on the severity of the damage and treatment for each classification will vary. The most important thing to remember when treating any burn is to first lower the temperature of the skin and surrounding tissue to prevent further damage.

  • First-degree burns-The mildest type of burn that is limited to the top layer of skin. First-degree burns cause redness, pain, and minor swelling and the skin is dry without blistering. Healing time is usually 3-6 days with peeling of the top layer of skin in 1-2 days.
  • Second-degree burns-These burns are more serious and involve the top layer of skin with the layer below it. The burned area will be red, blistered, painful, and will swell up. Often the blisters will break open, the area will appear wet and the skin will be cherry pink. Healing time varies but can take up to three weeks or longer.
  • Third-degree burns-Also known as full thickness burns, third-degree burns are the most serious type of burns that involve all layers of skin, nerve endings, and may reach underlying tissue. The surface of the skin will appear dry, waxy, and white, or leathery brown and charred. There will often be little or no pain as the nerve endings are damaged. Most third-degree burns require extensive medical treatment to heal, including surgery and skin grafts.

Sometimes these burns occur because of an accident. Other times burn injuries are due to the negligence of another party or are due to defective products. If your child suffered a burn injury due to no fault of their own, then they may have the right to be compensated for their damages.

Damages Recoverable in a Burn Injury Claim

Burn injuries can be devastating. Your child may face lifelong issues related to their injury, which can be very expensive. Some of the damages your child may be able to recover following a burn injury include:

  • Medical expenses
  • Future wage loss
  • Emotional distress
  • Pain and suffering
  • Loss of enjoyment of normal life
  • Disfigurement and disability
  • Punitive damages

If your child was tragically killed due to a burn injury, as a parent or legal guardian, you may be entitled to damages related to their wrongful death, which can include medical expenses, funeral and burial expenses, loss of consortium, and emotional distress.

Each burn injury case will be unique. If your child was injured in an accident, contact an experienced personal injury lawyer to review your case and determine who may be at fault for their damages and injuries and what you child may be entitled to.
