It appears black ice is to blame for a single-car crash that killed an Elgin woman and her dog on Monday. Julie Allard and her mixed boxer were driving southbound on Illinois 53 when Allard slid at the bridge over Northwest Highway. According to Illinois State Police, she hit a snow bank and lost control, sending her vehicle airborne.

Allard’s Toyota 4Runner was crushed as it hit the pavement, sliding into an oncoming vehicle. Both Allard and her dog, Cinnamon, were pronounced dead at the scene.
