A 12-year-old boy from Monmouth is in critical condition in Peoria after he was hit by a pickup truck two weeks ago. Ryan Smith was struck on October 11 while riding his bike on Fourth Avenue, according to Illinois State Police. The boy didn’t yield at a stop sign at Main Street and crossed into the path of a pickup truck driving southbound.

Smith, a 7th grader at Monmouth-Roseville Junior High School, was hit by the front right corner of the truck and flew from his bicycle. He was transported to OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth and later transported to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Smith suffered severe head trauma and was put in a medically induced coma last week to relieve pressure on his brain. The swelling has been reduced and he is responsive, but it’s still too early to determine the extent of the injuries, according to a representative from the Peoria hospital.
