If you were involved in a bicycle accident, it is likely that you suffered multiple injuries, including broken bones. Cyclists have very little protecting their body which puts them at risk for fractures if they are thrown from their bicycle and strike a motor vehicle or the roadway. Broken bones always require medical treatment and are often a disruption to your daily life. If you suffered a broken bone injury following a bicycle accident through no fault of your own, you may be entitled to compensation.

At 844 See Mike, we represent clients in Illinois who have suffered personal injuries from a bicycle accident, as well as family members who have lost a loved one in a road accident caused by the negligent or reckless conduct of another person. We know that when a bicycle collides with a vehicle weighing at least 2,000 pounds, the odds are not in the cyclist’s favor and the results can be tragic.

It’s important to consult with an experienced Chicago bicycle accident attorney as soon as possible to protect your rights and determine if you have a valid personal injury claim or wrongful death claim against a reckless or negligent driver. If you were injured in a bicycle accident, contact 844 See Mike, for a free consultation.

Types of Bone Fractures

There are multiple types of bone fractures that an injured cyclist could sustain following a bicycle accident, which could include:

  • Spiral – Common in twisting injuries where the break spirals around the bone.
  • Oblique – A diagonal break across the bone.
  • Comminuted – The break is in three or more pieces and there are fragments present at the fracture site.
  • Compression – The bone is crushed which causes the broken bone to be wider or flatter.
  • Transverse – The fracture is straight across the bone.
  • Open fracture – The bone breaks through the skin increasing the chance of a bone infection.

Treatment for a bone fracture will vary with the type of fracture that was sustained. Some bone fractures may only require setting and a cast however more severe fractures will be prone to complications that require multiple surgeries and rehabilitation therapy. Even with proper treatment, recovery is often lengthy and expensive, especially when an accident victim is unable to work and medical bills begin to pile up.
